a tagline perhaps?

All About It April

Inside of a properly maintained septic tank there is a relatively clear liquid in the center that is known as effluent. When wastewater is added to the tank the effluent level rises and flows through the outlet baffle to the lateral field. If your tank isn’t pumped often enough, the effluent retention time is greatly reduced. Meaning that the liquid area between the scum layer and the sludge becomes too small and the solids don’t have a chance to separate into scum and sludge. Resulting in solids getting pushed out into the lateral lines, causing them to clog.

Now we are aware that not everyone wants to know the details on septic tanks, but you should know how frequently your tank should be pumped. The average household pumps their septic tank every 3 to 5 years. To find a pumping schedule that is good for your system, there are 2 important factors:

  • number of occupants in the household
  • the gallon capacity of your septic tank

To help you out, we’ve provided a chart from the US EPA.

Pumping Schedule

**We would like to remind you that this is a recommended schedule based on the average daily flow of wastewater leaving your house. Some households use more water that generates more wastewater and solid waste that has to be removed from the tank, which will cause your tank to need more frequent maintenance.

FUN FACT OF THE MONTH – The 1886 proverb; March winds and April showers bring May flowers and June bugs; came from the United Kingdom where it is very rainy during April due to the jet streams, unlike most places in the U.S. where rain has come and gone before April or is still yet to come.

Tank of Gold

One of the most important things to know about a septic tank and system is what it is. A septic tank is a watertight container that is constructed of durable material that is resistant to corrosion and decay. The septic tank is underground and collects sewage to allow decomposition before draining to the lateral field or pond. Always remember that as a homeowner, you are responsible for the maintenance of your septic system. A well taken care of septic system protects your investment in your home and the health of your community.
